Americans turn out for peace rally
It was the other voice of America. Crowd size estimates ranged from 50,000 to 500,000. Either way, it was a sea of people who rallied in Washington to protest at President George Bush's policy on Iraq.
Give Peace a Chance, No War for Oil, Drop Bush Not Bombs, were just some of the banners waved.
Among those voicing thier opinion, actress Jessica Lange took the microphone, telling the people: "It is an immoral war that they are beginning. We must not be silencied, we have to stand up and say no. We are the people, you are not speaking for us."
Reverend Jesse Jackson was equally emphatic, saying: "Young America, thank you for being here. Thank you for fighting today. Today you are not our future, you are our right now. Fight back right now. Stand for peace right now. Stand for justice right now."
Latest polls show only a third of Americans back a unilateral war on Iraq. But 80 per cent would support military strikes if approved by the United Nations Security Council
