Two suspected al-Qaeda men killed in J&K

NEW DELHI: Adding a new dimension to the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan on the border, the Army for the first time on Sunday came across a group of heavily-armed foreign mercenaries suspected to be al-Qaeda elements close to the Line of Control in Drass sector, killing two of them.
Though the identity of the slain militants was not immediately known, high-placed Army sources said they appeared to be "Arab-looking". Along with these two militants, two Pakistani soldiers were also killed in the same sector as Indian Army opened retaliatory fire after the Mushkoh Valley, Drass, Batalik and Kargil sectors were subjected to heavy mountain artillery and mortar fire by the Pakistani forces.
The intense Pakistani fire, which has been continuing in this sector for the past five days, was obviously a covering fire to enable these militants to sneak into the Indian territory, Army sources said.
The encounter with the militants assumes significance in the wake of top defence officials quoting intelligence reports reporting massing of over 1,200 militants, including suspected al-Qaeda and elements of Taliban cadres in Gultari, Minimarg and in PoK areas facing these sectors.
Recent satellite and high-altitude UAV imagery has shown Pakistan inducting heavily-armed militants close to their Army frontier deployment all along the LoC and New Delhi had expected that after recent assurances conveyed through senior US State Department officials, Islamabad would disarm these militants and tell them to go back.
