February 24, 2002
LONDON: US and British special forces are reportedly hunting for Osama bin Laden in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

US Delta Force soldiers and British Special Air Service troops have formed a 40-man operation in a bid to hunt down bin Laden, who is suspected of masterminding the September 11 attacks on US cities, London's Daily Telegraph reported.

Indian intelligence told the US Central Intelligence Agency last month that they believed bin Laden was hiding in the Himalayas, protected by the Islamic guerilla group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, the paper reported.

In other developments:

* NEW York City officials are outraged that online auctioneer eBay is planning to sell September 11 artefacts.

New York City lawyer Michael Cardozo called for the website to stop the sale of radio conversations between emergency services personnel, pictures of people falling from the World Trade Centre and other terrorism-related artefacts.

* US immigration officials revealed yesterday they are still holding 326 people detained for questioning after the September 11 attacks.

A Justice Department official said about 200 of those still held are of the most interest to the FBI and that most of the rest should be released soon.

* QUESTIONS have been raised over the fate of al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners, with Britain warning the US it might not hand over further captives unless the Geneva Convention was honoured.

The New York Times reported Britain and France, both of whom have special forces troops operating in Afghanistan, warned they would consider not handing over to the US any prisoners they took.

* FOUR Tunisians, including a man alleged to be a leader of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network in Europe, were jailed for up to five years yesterday in Italy's first trial of terror suspects since September 11.

The four were tried behind closed doors in a Milan court under a fast-track justice system and were found guilty of trading in false documents and of organising illegal immigration, lawyers said.
