Lioness' Baby Antelope Falls Prey to Lion

From Kenya, there is news of a strange adoption that has ended badly.

A grown lioness had adopted a baby antelope, but on Sunday at a game reserve in northern Kenya, a hungry male lion attacked and consumed the antelope, an oryx.

An employee from a lodge near Samburu National Park in Nairobi says the lioness led the young animal to a river to drink. But he says when the lioness went to take a nap, the male lion waiting somewhere behind the bushes caught and killed the oryx.

The employee says the onlooking lioness roared and was very angry before the lion took the carcass down by a tree and ate half of it.

The lioness first found the oryx soon after it was born two weeks ago. The lioness then baffled animal experts by adopting the oryx, giving it affection and protection from predators as if it were her own cub.
