Report: Australian synagogue vandalized

A synagogue in Australia has been vandalized just days before Pessah, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Sunday.
The Newcastle Synagogue has been spray-painted with swastikas and Nazi references such as "Hitler was 'ere", "Jews must die" and "Six million more".
Seven windows were smashed, along with two other windows, and eggs were thrown at the building.
According to police, the attack took place on Wednesday night, which would have been Adolf Hitler's 116th birthday.
Synagogue president David Gubbay said he had received a message of condolence from Michael Malone, Catholic Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle.
"It was very kind for the bishop to call up," Gubbay said on Saturday. "We were hoping to have all the mess cleaned up today but, because it's the Sabbath, we didn't want to have any work done so we thought we'd wait until tomorrow."
Neighbours told police they heard glass smashing overnight, then saw two young men run along the street.
The graffiti included a crossed-out Star of David and "88", neo-Nazi code for "Heil Hitler".
Attacks on Jews in Australia have surged to record levels during 2004, thanks in part to the growing use of the Internet by anti-Semitic groups, a report released by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry has found.
In its annual report on anti-Semitism in Australia, Australian Jewry's umbrella organization said there were 50 percent more anti-Jewish attacks between October 2003 and September 2004 than the average recorded over the past 14 years.
These included incidents in which the words 'kill the Jews' were burned into the lawn outside the state parliament of Tasmania, as well as anti-Semitic graffiti and attacks on synagogues, individuals and property.
A total of 455 such attacks took place during the recording period, marking the third year in a row that the number has topped 450.
