Egypt 'rejects Gaza police role'
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has rejected suggestions his country could police parts of the Gaza Strip in the event of an Israeli withdrawal.
Mr Mubarak told French newspaper Le Figaro the plan was a "trap" which could force Egyptian troops to confront Palestinians and Israelis.
Israeli officials had reportedly asked Egypt if it could help police Gaza.
Israel is considering uprooting settlements and withdrawing troops from the Gaza Strip, which borders Egypt.
Mr Mubarak said it was up to the Palestinian Authority to "impose the law and ensure the security in Gaza".
He said Egypt would police its side of the border with Gaza, while the Palestinians must be given the power to manage their own security after an Israeli withdrawal.
Israeli security officials reportedly discussed ceding control to Egyptian forces along a section of the Gaza Strip, while on a visit to Cairo last month.
One proposal apparently mooted would have seen Egyptian troops policing the so-called "Philadelphia Corridor" - a narrow strip of the border under which Palestinian militants have built tunnels for smuggling arms from Egypt.
Israel fears this trickle of smuggled weapons could turn into a tide after its troops leave Gaza.
The Egyptian Government is said to fear Palestinian militant groups could be emboldened by an Israeli withdrawal and start directing attacks against Egypt.
But Mr Mubarak said he was worried Egyptian troops could be caught trying to calm two foes in the Gaza Strip.
"We would find ourselves in a position of confrontation with the Palestinians," he said, adding "if there is a problem, we could even find ourselves in conflict with the Israelis".
Israel's Foreign Minister, Silvan Shalom, is due to visit Egypt for talks with President Mubarak on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian official said on Sunday that Yasser Arafat was set to meet Egypt's intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, to discuss the Israeli pull-out from Gaza.
