SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea posted a 28 percent drop in its trade surplus last year despite record-high exports, the government has said.
Exports rose 14.6 percent year-on-year to 325.9 billion dollars in 2006, while imports soared 18.4 percent to 309.3 billion dollars, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said.
Imports were fueled by high energy and raw material prices, it said.
As a result, the trade surplus dwindled to 16.65 billion dollars last year from 23.18 billion dollars in 2005.
Ministry officials said exports are expected to reach 360 billion dollars in 2007 despite concern about slowing global demand and the won's rise against the US dollar.
The won gained nearly 10 percent against the greenback last year, depressing many South Korean firms relying on exports.
The central Bank of Korea has cut its economic growth target for next year from 5.0 to 4.4 percent, citing a possible hard landing of the US economy, rising oil prices and a crisis over North Korea's nuclear program.
